My Practice

artist making a mess.jpg

The release of paint from loaded bristles sliding and halting across a toothy canvas, the sight and scent of charcoal dust gently flowing down the page, the compelling pungency of linseed oil suffusing the room when I open up my bag of paint sticks, the glide of the tiny throw away scissors as they slice through the magazine ads I use for collages — this is what studio practice means to me.

What I love most, however, is life drawing. I love the dance, the intimate interaction between model and artist, as both make use of their bodies to communicate and create, one by posing, the other by mark making. My goal in such sessions is to re-create the body before me, which vibrates with mood and energy, through the placement of line and shadow. I am drawn to the thick curves and muscles of the flesh, the body announcing its presence, asserting, “I am here!”

I have participated in a number of virtual shows during the pandemic, some of which are still available: a Berta Walker Gallery show, two shows at Truro Center for the Arts: What is Push/Pull? Artists Respond and Small Works, and the Student Showcase on the Shabott Barrett website. I regularly contribute artwork to the PAAM 12x12 Members’ show, as well.

My work has been described as luscious, naturally filled with vibrancy and joy, off the wall, dynamic.
